About taiwanxifu

‘Taiwanxifu’ (pronounced ‘shee foo’) means ‘Taiwan daughter-in-law’ in Chinese and has been my nickname ever since I married my Taiwanese husband, Sam. I love sampling Taiwanese food, even local specialties such as stinky tofu, pigs blood cake and Taipei beef noodle soup with offal. But there are many other options on the menu. Promise!

Here’s a question: did you eat the sesame chicken made with alcohol? If so, what did you think? People tell me a.) it’s not enough alcohol to be dangerous while breastfeeding (maybe – I don’t know) or b.) “all the alcohol cooks off, don’t worry”…but I’ve had that soup before – someone brought it into an office where I was doing a seminar – and I was feeling a bit tipsy after one bowl. The alcohol most definitely did not “cook off” of that pot of sesame chicken!

Yes, I ate sesame chicken made with alcohol. According to Mrs Yang, the ‘nanny’ who looked after me, it is fine to have cooked rice wine from the eighth day after birth onwards. But she always cooked the chicken soup (or other dishes) thoroughly so the alcohol was well and truly gone. She added the rice wine to the sesame chicken soup at the beginning and then cooked it for around half an hour.

By the sound of things, the soup you had was pretty potent. I have noticed many people add rice wine to the end of cooking rather than the beginning, which might explain it. Breastfeeding guidelines pretty much state you should avoid any alchol when nursing. I have heard that some guidelines are a bit more relaxed, e.g. a glass of red now and then is okay. I don’t think it is a good idea, though, to get in the habit of drinking socially as once you start it is easy to drink more than you expect to. Nor do I think it is a good idea to drink drunken chicken soup.

    Hi Serina,

I have left a message for you on Facebook, but I am not sure if you can see it. I am due in May and am looking for yuepo. Is it possible to get in touch with your yuepo? Or any other yuepo you may be able to recommend?
